Photo of a transcribed copy of a lost original document written in Turki using Arabic letters, with partial interlinear translations into New Persian (apparently added by Denison Ross' assistant).

محتوا

A modern transcription of a lost original land sale document written in the iqrār (acknowledgment) format regarding a plot of land in Sınmas sold for 1000 yarmaqs. Erdal’s transcription of the text does not include the interlinear New Persian annotations. This is one of six land sale documents written in the late eleventh century, collected by Denison Ross, of which photos were kept at SOAS. Formally, these documents differ from the non-Muslim deeds of land sale in the collection, which according to Erdal follow Chinese models. Erdal used these photos while the whereabouts of the originals were (and remain) unknown. Provenance seems to be a garden outside Yarkand where the documents were  found in 1911. 2 This is the document concerning which the names of the witnesses have been noted at its end.
3 I, chamberlain Muḥammad, son of Ḥusayn the pilgrim, acknowledge that
I have sold a piece of land in Sınmas
4 (fit) for (the sowing of) two loads (of grain), with its four boundaries, for a
thousand yarmaqs.
5 The first boundary of this plot is the Deep Canal; its second boundary is
the plot of commander Masʿūd Toġrıl;
6 its third boundary is the Čimkät ridge; its fourth boundary is the land of
the Pilgrim Chamberlain, the
7 mulberry-garden [+1] I have sold the land within these boundaries. I have
completely received its worth. The land
8 I have handed over to Isrāfīl Čavlı, the commander. Concerning this land
there is no litigation with, or legal trick
9 towards anybody. Saying 'Whoever starts litigation, his litigation is null.' I have, for the sake of
10 integrity, in the year 515, a ... year, in the month of rabī'u 'l-ākhir, given
