Content

A memo sent by ʿAlī b. Najīb and Muḥammad b. Najīb to two shiḥna officers, informing them that a commander called Ḥādhiq has been dispatched as backup to help them recover the full tax payment of 90 donkey loads of grain and hay owed by peasants in the Zīrdamān Valley to the commander Sayf al-Dīn Najm al-Umarāʾ Qutluq Arslān Tegin (?) after the peasants expressed resistance and insisted that they would pay only 70 donkey loads.

1  ʿAlī b. Najīb and Muḥammad b. Najīb
2  [Bismillāh?]
3  Shujāʿ al-Dīn Zayn al-Rijāl Muḥammad b. Ḥasan, and the most illustrious
4  Rashīd al-Dīn Najm al-Rijāl Muḥammad, may their power endure,
5  receive my greetings, know [my] longing [to see them], and take note that
6  in the tax assessment for Zīrdamān Valley, 90 donkey loads of grain have been allocated to
7  the amīr Sayf al-Dīn Najm al-Umarāʾ Qutluq Arslān
8  Tegin, may his power endure,
9  as well as 90 donkey loads of straw. Now
10  [the peasants of Zīrdamān] are saying, ‘We will not give more than 70 donkey loads.
11  [Otherwise,] there will be no tax assessment.’ At this moment, the trustworthy commander
12  Ḥādhiq has been sent so that 90 donkey loads
13  of grain and 90 donkey loads of hay can [be retrieved to] comply with the tax assessment, and 
14  so that no obstacle may come [in its way]. And if an obstacle
15  [+/− 3] account.
1  Shujāʿ al-Dīn should pay 33 dinars and 2 dāngs of silver
2  for the value of the donkey to the trustworthy commander [Ḥādhiq].
3  It shall be accounted for. In Dhū al-Qaʿda in the year
4 614, written by ʿAlī b. Najīb.
