Content

Fragment of a letter, which is difficult to decipher. The sender seems to explain why the proceeds from a sale hadn’t yet reached the lord whom he addresses in the letter. The sender adds that he has sold straw, firewood, donkeys and a cow in exchange for grain, asking the lord to retrieve from his brother the amount due. A second interpretation is that the sender hasn’t got any money to give to the lord, and is sending the lord to his brother to collect the amount due.

[+ 1] the excellent (?), the eminent and [+/-1] khwāja, may [God] extend [+/- 7]
[+ 1] we were informed, but [+/- 9] and the khwāja
[+ 1] from the mountainous place, where work [+/- 7] and you had also said:
“You should do as ʿAlī Khaljī [did].” The khwāja knows that I would not do such a thing;
it is precisely why I stayed in the mountains, namely to give what is due to the people, especially what is yours. This was a harsh punishment (?) for us.
I should not be [away] for more than two months until I return. The khwāja knows that wherever we are,
we are under the shadow of the khwāja. I never kept anything [from you] because I always sent [your share of the] value to Aḥmad Washkanī. The next time
a messenger comes, I shall send something. I sent a diram-sang of gold [+ 1], to Aḥmad Washkanī right away.
Aḥmad Washkanī sends many greetings. I had put 150 kharwār of straw,
150 kharwār of firewood, three donkeys, and one cow, in the care of the brother. ʿAlī
sold everything there was[to sell]. [He sold] the cow, and exchanged [everything] for grain. Now, I strongly hope
that the khwāja can retrieve his money from my brother. Moreover, I put [aside] ʿAlī’s [share] of the sum of that [sale].
One hundred thousand greetings to the khwāja. Aḥmad sends one hundred thousand greetings.
